Carrying around 85,000 gallons of gasoline, a tanker truck lost control on Route 18 and overturned at the south ramp of Route 1 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, early morning on June 3, 2012.
As the content of the trucks were spilled, both sections of the said highway were closed to traffic for several hours that day.
According to Capt. Chris Boyler of the New Brunswick Fire Department, the 5 a.m. incident spilled about 100 gallons of gasoline to the road. “We were quite lucky.”, Boyler said as the spilled gasoline failed to ignite for there were no ignition source present at the scene.
The tanker truck driver who was not identified, according to the authorities, only suffered minor injuries but was immediately taken to the local hospital for treatment.
After the incident, the state Department of Environmental Protection immediately dispatched a team to the scene while a private cleanup firm took soil samples to determine the extent of gasoline contamination.
The fire official further said that emergency responders drilled holes to the overturned tanker and pumped its remaining 8,400 gallons to another truck before it was righted and cleared from the ramp.
